Authentic Glühwein Recipe: German Mulled Wine

Ingredients

• 0.75 cup water
• 0.75 cup white sugar
• 1 (3 inch) cinnamon stick
• 2 medium oranges, divided
• 10 whole cloves
• 1 (750 milliliter) bottle red wine

Instructions

1. In a large saucepan, combine water, sugar, and cinnamon sticks. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low.
2. Cut an orange in half and squeeze its juice into the simmering sugar mixture. Stud each orange peel half with 5 cloves, then add them to the saucepan. Simmer over low heat until the mixture thickens into a syrupy consistency, approximately 20 to 30 minutes.
3. Slice the remaining orange into rounds and set them aside for garnish.
4. Remove the saucepan from the heat. Stir in the red wine. Discard the orange peels and cinnamon sticks.
5. Ladle the warm Glühwein into mugs and garnish each serving with the reserved orange slices.
