Classic Cheese Straws Recipe

Ingredients

• 0.5 cup butter, softened
• 4 cups shredded Cheddar cheese
• 2 cups all-purpose flour
• 1 teaspoon salt
• milk, as needed
• 0.25 teaspoon ground red pepper

Instructions

1. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Prepare baking sheets with parchment paper or a light coating of grease.
2. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and Cheddar cheese using an electric mixer until the mixture is smooth and well combined. Incorporate flour and salt, mixing until a soft dough forms. If the dough appears too dry, gradually add milk, 1 teaspoon at a time, until it binds together.
3. Place the dough on a lightly floured surface and roll it to ½ inch thickness. Use a knife, pastry wheel, or a star-tipped cookie press to cut the dough into 2-inch strips for a traditional presentation.
4. Space the cheese straws 1 ½ inches apart on the prepared baking sheets. For added flavor, sprinkle with ground red pepper.
5. Bake in the preheated oven for approximately 10 to 15 minutes, or until the straws are golden brown and crisp. Let them cool on the baking sheets for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
