Classic Thumbprint Cookies Recipe

Ingredients

• 1 large egg, separated, divided
• 0.5 cup butter, softened
• 0.25 cup packed brown sugar
• 1 cup all-purpose flour
• 0.5 teaspoon vanilla extract
• 0.25 teaspoon salt
• 0.25 cup finely chopped walnuts
• 0.67 cup any flavor fruit jam

Instructions

1. Gather all necessary ingredients for the thumbprint cookies.
2. Preheat your oven to 300°F (150°C). Lightly grease two cookie sheets and set them aside.
3. In a small bowl, whisk the egg white until slightly frothy. Place the chopped walnuts in a separate small bowl.
4. In a mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter, brown sugar, and egg yolk until the mixture is light and fluffy, approximately 2 minutes.
5. Gradually add the flour, vanilla extract, and salt to the creamed mixture. Mix until all ingredients are thoroughly combined.
6. Scoop the cookie dough into 1 ½-inch balls. Dip each ball in the egg white, then roll it in the chopped walnuts until fully coated. Place the walnut-covered cookies 2 inches apart on the prepared cookie sheets.
7. Bake the cookies in the preheated oven for about 5 minutes, or until they are slightly puffed.
8. Remove the cookies from the oven. Gently press an indent in the center of each cookie using your thumb or the rounded end of a wooden spoon. Fill each thumbprint with your favorite jam to the brim.
9. Return the filled cookies to the oven and continue baking for approximately 8 minutes, or until the jam is set and the cookies are golden.
10. Take the cookies out of the oven and carefully transfer them to wire racks. Allow them to cool completely before serving.
