In a large bowl, cream together the sugar and shortening with an electric mixer until smooth. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, then mix in the vanilla extract. In a separate large bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the creamed mixture, stirring until just combined. Stir in the chopped walnuts. Cover the dough and refrigerate for at least 1 hour to chill.
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
Pour confectioners' sugar into a shallow bowl. Roll the chilled dough into walnut-sized balls. Roll each ball in confectioners' sugar, coating completely. Place the sugared dough balls 2 inches apart on ungreased baking sheets.
