Heart-Shaped Cookies Recipe

Ingredients

• 1 cup white sugar
• 1 cup unsalted butter
• 1 egg egg
• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
• 3 cups all-purpose flour
• 1 teaspoon baking powder
• 0.5 teaspoon salt
• 1 (10 ounce) jar strawberry jam
• 0.25 cup powdered sugar, or as needed

Instructions

1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) for baking.
2. Cream together sugar and butter using an electric mixer until light and fluffy, approximately 5 minutes. Blend in the egg and vanilla extract. In a separate bowl, combine flour, baking powder, and salt; gradually add this dry mixture to the butter mixture, mixing until well combined.
3. Place a portion of the dough between two sheets of parchment paper and roll to your preferred thickness. Repeat with any remaining dough. Transfer the rolled dough, still between the parchment paper, to a cookie sheet and chill in the refrigerator for at least 10 minutes. Re-roll any scraps after cutting the cookies and repeat the chilling process.
4. Cut out 24 heart-shaped cookies of uniform size from the dough. Using a smaller heart-shaped cutter, create a second, smaller heart-shaped hole in half of the cookies; this opening will showcase the jam filling. Move the cut cookies to a baking sheet.
5. Bake the cookies in the preheated oven until the edges turn golden, around 8 to 10 minutes.
6. Place the baking sheet on a wire rack and let the cookies cool completely, about 20 to 30 minutes. Spread approximately 1/2 teaspoon of jam onto the centers of the cookies without heart-shaped cutouts. Dust the remaining cookies (those with the heart-shaped openings) with powdered sugar, then carefully place them on top of the jam-filled cookies.
